Consumable Instructional Classifications

Consumables are materials that patrons use once and discard. Spelling workbooks and lab manuals are typical examples of Consumables.

You can add copies of Consumable records by entering a simple copy count. The status of the copies is automatically set to Available.

You cannot assign barcode numbers to Consumables. Because of this, you do not circulate them like regular textbooks; you cannot check them out or check them in. They do not appear in Circulation search results. You can simply delete a quantity of copies from the Catalog as you give them out.

In an inventory, you cannot make Consumable copies Lost. You keep track of them by a simple count and reconcile the number of copies you have on hand at the end of the inventory.

You can designate an existing Instructional Classification as a Consumable as long as there are no associated records in the district that already have copies with barcode numbers or statuses other than Available or In Transit.
